Selection Criteria

ALBERTA TABLE TENNIS ASSOCIATION (ATTA)
TEAM ALBERTA POLICY AND SELECTIONS
(Effective November 1, 2024)
 
 
The Team Alberta Policy is based on the Alberta Table Tennis Association’s Long Term Athlete Development goals that prioritizes skills consistency in the early development stages and progress to increasing competition-oriented training and activities in later stages.
 
 
1.  Membership and Residency Policy
To be eligible for junior and senior teams, an athlete must:
  • Hold a valid Alberta Table Tennis Association (ATTA) Membership and be a member in good standing in a 3-year period from the fiscal year of team selection.
  • Must have Canadian Citizenship or landed immigrant status.
  • Must be a permanent resident in Alberta for at least 6 months from the date of team selections.
  • If previously affiliated with any other Table Tennis Association within the previous 12 months, the athlete must establish residency in Alberta for a minimum of 6 months and must be a registered member of the ATTA for 6 months prior to team selection.
 
2.  Tournament Participation:
Junior Athletes:
  • Must participate in 4 of 5 sanctioned Alberta tournaments; one of which must be in the city outside of where they currently reside; Alberta Junior Open* tournaments are required (effective 2025).
Senior Athletes:
  • Must participate in 3 of 4 sanctioned Alberta tournaments; one of which must be in the city outside of where they currently reside (effective 2025).
Qualified Competitions:
  • Junior Team 2025 Nationals Tryout in Calgary - December 7, 2024.  Details available in due course. Deadline to register is December 4, 2024.
  • Junior Team 2025 Nationals Tryout in Edmonton - January 2025.  Date and details available in due course.  Deadline to register is December 4, 2024.
 
  • Calgary Open - hosted by Calgary United Sports Table Tennis Association (effective 2025).
  • CUSTTA Open - hosted by Calgary United Sports Table Tennis Association (effective 2025).
  • Edmonton Chinatown Open - hosted by Edmonton Hung Fung Table Tennis Club (effective 2025).
  • St. Albert Open – hosted by Edmonton Connection Multisport Centre (effective 2025).
  • Alberta Junior Open* - hosted by ATTA in Edmonton (*required effective 2025).
  • Alberta Junior Open* – hosted by ATTA in Calgary (*required effective 2025).
Points Calculation:
  • Rankings
1st place - 5 points
2nd place - 4 points
3rd place - 3 points
 4th place - 2 points
  • Performance: 10 points, at discretion of coaching team
All events and/or schedule is subject to change and amendments.  Notifications shall be emailed to members and/or published on ATTA’s website (when available).
 
3.  Junior Team Selection Criteria:
 
Eligibility
  • Meet the requirements of membership and residency policy.
  • Meet the requirements of tournament participation.
  • Comply with ATTA program policies and procedures.
  • Show respect to sportsmanship.
  • Fulfill participation commitments under (A) Junior Training Program, or, (B) Junior Competition Training Program.
(A) Junior Training Program*:
  • Open to junior players age 9-18.
 
  • Acceptance by selection from Alberta Junior Team Tryouts, or from individual request under exceptional circumstances at the discretion of ATTA’s coaching team.
  • Full participation commitments in the season’s training (10 months) program which includes 3 mandatory camps (Winter/Spring/Summer).
  • Program oriented to Long Term Development module of Table Tennis Canada.
(B) Junior Competition Training Program**:
  • Program is mandatory for junior players who have completed two required Nationals Tryouts under Qualified Competitions*, and have been selected.
  • Full participation commitments in 2 months (40 hours) junior team training during the season.  Exceptions are made on case basis for Alberta players residing in areas outside of Edmonton and Calgary.
  • Full participation commitments in 2 of 3 training camps (Winter/Spring/Summer); Spring camp to be held March 24-28, 2025.  Summer camp July 2025 (pre-national) is mandatory.
  • Program oriented in commitment to team Alberta’s competition goals at national championships.
(*) (**) Training fees are determined on seasonal basis according to eligible funding availability.  Fees will be stated on Registration form, or pro-rata provided at time of registration.
Final Standings
  • 80% of Final standings is accounted for points collected from ranks at the 4 sanctioned provincial tournaments (See tournament participation)
  • 20% of Final standings is accounted for performance points granted by coaching team. While two players are ranked at the same place of the team, coaching team must decide the final ranks based on the positive attitude, persistent efforts and required attendance on all training sessions.
Double Event Pairing
  • All team players must play a double event as part of Long-Term Athlete Development orientation.
  • Double partners will be arranged at the discretion of coaching team.
  • This is a part of participation commitment of Junior Training Program and Junior Competition Training Program.
 
4.  Senior Team Selection Criteria:
  • Open to all Alberta athletes.
  • Meet the requirements of membership and residency policy.
  • Meet the requirements of tournament participation.
  • Comply with ATTA program policies and procedures.
  • Show respect to sportsmanship.
  • Be top 3 in the team ranks; while in the same rank, the priority of spots will be given to the junior players of ATTA’s junior training program, in accordance to the Long-Term Development module of Table Tennis Canada.
