Selection Criteria

ALBERTA TABLE TENNIS ASSOCIATION (ATTA)
TEAM ALBERTA POLICY AND SELECTIONS
(Updated September 1, 2025)
  
The Team Alberta Policy is based on the Alberta Table Tennis Association’s Long-Term Athlete Development goals, which prioritize skill consistency in the early development stages and progress to increasing competition-oriented training and activities in later stages.
  
1.  Membership and Residency Policy
To be eligible for junior and senior teams, an athlete must:
  • Hold a valid Alberta Table Tennis Association (ATTA) Membership and be a member in good standing in a 3-year period from the fiscal year of team selection.
  • Must have Canadian Citizenship or landed immigrant status.
  • Must be a permanent resident in Alberta for at least 6 months from the date of team selections.
  • If previously affiliated with any other Table Tennis Association within the previous 12 months, the athlete must establish residency in Alberta for a minimum of 6 months and must be a registered member of the ATTA for 6 months prior to team selection.
 2.  Tournament Participation:
Junior Athletes:
  • Participation in ATTA and TTCAN sanctioned tournament are encouraged.  Alberta Junior Open tournaments are required.  Exact dates TBA.
  • Participation in ATTA Tryouts are required.  Exact dates TBA.
Senior Athletes:
  • Must participate in 3 of 4 sanctioned Alberta tournaments; one of which must be in the city outside of where they currently reside (effective 2025).
Qualified Competitions:
  • Open Tournaments hosted by ATTA and/or it’s affiliated member clubs (Email info@attaabtt.com or See ATTA Website for reference).
  • Alberta Junior Open tournaments are required for junior programs.  Exact dates TBA.
  • ATTA Tryouts are required for junior programs.  Exact dates TBA.
Points Calculation:
  • Rankings
1st place - 5 points
2nd place - 4 points
3rd place - 3 points
 4th place - 2 points
  • Performance: 10 points, at the discretion of the coaching team
All events and/or schedules are subject to change and amendments.  Notifications shall be emailed to members and/or published on ATTA’s website.
 
3.  Junior Team Selection Criteria:
 
Eligibility
  • Meet the requirements of membership and residency policy.
  • Meet the requirements of tournament participation.
  • Comply with ATTA program policies and procedures.
  • Show respect to sportsmanship.
  • Fulfill participation commitments under (A) Junior Training Program, or, (B) Junior Competition Training Program.
 
(A) Junior Training Program*:
  • Open to junior players aged 9-18.
  • Acceptance by selection from Alberta Junior Team Tryouts, or from individual request under exceptional circumstances at the discretion of ATTA’s coaching team.
  • Full participation commitments in the season’s training program, which includes 3 mandatory camps (Spring/Winter/Summer (pre-nationals).
  • Summer Camp (pre-nationals) is mandatory.
  • Program oriented to the Long Term Development module of the Alberta Table Tennis Association and Table Tennis Canada.
 
 
(B) Junior Competition Training Program**:
  • The program is mandatory for junior players who have completed two required Nationals Tryouts under Qualified Competitions and have been selected.
  • Full participation commitments in Summer Camp (pre-nationals) junior team intensive training (5 days @ 3 hours/day).  Exceptions are considered on a case-by-case basis for Alberta players residing in areas outside of Edmonton and Calgary.
  • Summer Camp (pre-nationals) is mandatory.
  • Program oriented in commitment to team Alberta’s competition goals at national championships.
(*) (**) Training fees are determined on a seasonal basis according to eligible funding availability.  Fees will be stated on the Registration form, or pro-rata, provided at the time of registration.
Final Standings
  • 80% of Final standings is accounted for points collected from ranks at the required tournaments (See tournament participation)
  • 20% of Final standings is accounted for performance points granted by coaching team. While two players are ranked at the same place of the team, coaching team must decide the final ranks based on the positive attitude, persistent efforts and required attendance on all training sessions.
Double Event Pairing
  • All team players must play a double event as part of Long-Term Athlete Development orientation.
  • Double partners will be arranged at the discretion of coaching team.
  • This is a part of participation commitment of Junior Training Program and Junior Competition Training Program.
 
4.  Senior Team Selection Criteria:
  • Open to all Alberta athletes.
  • Meet the requirements of membership and residency policy.
  • Meet the requirements of tournament participation.
  • Comply with ATTA program policies and procedures.
  • Show respect to sportsmanship.
  • Be top 3 in the team ranks; while in the same rank, the priority of spots will be given to the junior players of ATTA’s junior training program, in accordance to the Long-Term Development module of Table Tennis Canada.
